There was something in the grain of this wood that looked like the ripple that trails behind a leaf floating on the surface of the water. As I let this idea steep, I had listened to a podcast highlighting the importance of aquatic insect hatches, particularly the mayfly, and the role this plays in the behaviour of our many cherished sportfish species, including brown trout.
And In That Moment I Realized, I Was a Sitting Duck is an original, one-of-one, hand burned piece by Abby Wynia. The piece features a brown trout pre surface-break in pursuit of a hatched mayfly floating on the surface of the stream. The burl slice canvas was hand selected from a local wood shop, and the concept for the piece formed over several months thereafter. This piece truly captures that anxious anticipation of the chase, from the perspective of the brown trout, and the unsuspecting nature of the mayfly. The ending? Well, that's up to your imagination.
