A ‘Wives Tail, 2023
Original, one-of-one, hand-burned pyrography by Abby Wynia completed fall 2023, A ‘Wives Tail features two chinook (king) salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) pursuing a cloud of alewife (Alosa pseudoharengus) on bias-cut cherry.
The piece was inspired by the uniquely engineered predator-prey relationship observed between these two introduced species in the Great Lakes, particularly Lake Ontario. Pacific salmon from the west, Atlantic herring from the east, and together one of the most renowned sport fisheries in North America. A ‘Wives Tail showcases the legacy of lake and fisheries management decisions in the Great Lakes over the past 150 years.
